Welcome one and all to a fresh new show, mixed and produced by me Wanghart, for my online music website liaoliao.tw, hosted by Boxfrequency.FM. Each month I’m going to be featuring a pick of the promos i receive at the liaoliao.tw headquarters in Kaohsiung City, here in Taiwan. New music released by some of the worlds top independent artists and labels. Music you wouldn’t normally get to hear out here in the far east.
In the last half of this months show we have a mix from an artist with whom we are about to launch a new sub label here at liaoliao.tw’s Of Life Label Series.
Tree Of Life is our new project, an imprint dedicated to releasing high quality albums across a variety of deep soul soaked genres, and our debut release has been produced by Migrate South, AKA Matthew McDonald.
While the name Migrate South may be relatively unknown, Matthew certainly is not. He’s been a DJ for over 15 years and a producer for 7. He released his first record as “NoRequests” on the Dikso label in 2009 when the edit and nu-disco scene was still in its infancy. In 2010 he started producing as Matthew Kyle and over the next couple of years put out EPs and remixes for labels like Audio Parallax Recordings, Our Nights Recordings, Los Grandes, and Hotbox Music.
As Matthew’s skills as a producer grew so did his need to create new sounds and a desire to move on from edits. Matthew Kyle retired and retreated from the music scene and emerged a year later as Softmore with a renewed focus on his craft. As Softmore he released his debut album Fragments in the summer of 2013 as well as a 5 track EP for our label Fruit Of Life.
Matthew is a highly underrated master of chilled smooth beats with deep woozy melodies and as Migrate South he feels he has found his voice.
His new Melancholy Matters LP on our new label Tree Of Life is a slow burning journey through the atmospheric and sultry sounds of hip-hop. An ensemble of deep downtempo breaks steered by intelligent and highly evocative drum programming, blending downbeat soul vocals with carefully crafted jazz influenced samples.
